Agriculture Policy Coordinator

Areas of Responsibility:

A full-time staff position for agriculture program planning, implementation and evaluation including:

1. Constituency organizing in response to targeted agricultural food policy issues and/or needs identified in specific rural areas.

2. Coordinating and implementing all agriculture related projects, unless otherwise assigned.

3. Advocating for state and federal policies, and networking with regional and national groups around those policies.

4. Training and coordinating field staff or farmer-advocates.

5. Researching ag issues affecting family farmers and sustainable agriculture.

6. Raising public awareness on the issues through workshops, and presentations and written materials.

7. Working with other ISA staff on related issues such as food policy, water quality and rural economic development.

8. Collaborating with other staff in organizational responsibilities, including fundraising.

JOB SKILLS: A minimum of a bachelor's degree is preferred. Work Experience with a public interest organization and a commitment to organizing and advocacy are need for this position. The successful candidate will possess the following skills.

1. General knowledge of family farm/agricultural /natural resources issues.

2. Commitment to grassroots training and empowerment.

3. Ability to organize and work with rural people, in particular, farmers.

4. Excellent writing and communication skills.

5. Understanding of the legislative process.

6. Skills in research and issue analysis

7. Working knowledge of alternative or reduced input farming strategy development.

8. Experience or ability to work with the media.

9. Skills in organizational development, planning and strategy development.

10. Computer word processing and beginning desktop publishing skills.

11. Skills in fundraising.

SALARY RANGE AND TRAVEL: Salary range $27,000 to $32,000 commensurate with experience and background, plus benefits. Must be available to travel, some nights and weekends required, and have access to a reliable vehicle.
