DESCRIPTION: Pine Mountain Settlement School is a not-for-profit organization located in Harlan County, Kentucky. Environmental and cultural education are one of the primary programs offered by the School. Approximately 4,000 students (per year) from across the region participate in Pine Mountain Settlement School's residential or day environmental education program. Our curriculum is focused on teaching both the natural and cultural environments of eastern Kentucky. For more information please visit our web site at www.pinemountainsettlementschool.com DUTIES: Supervised by an on-site director the instructor will teach primarily K-8th students. The emphasis of the program is on ecosystem ecology with classes including geology, stream and forest ecology, early pioneer lifestyles, Native Americans of the region, night hikes, astronomy, wildflower, bird and and tree identification, crafts of the region, and water quality. Other duties are those normally associated with a residential outdoor education facility, including night activities, classroom maintenance, trail maintenance, curriculum development, assisting in training of interns, and other duties related to the program. QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of BA/BS in biology, ecology or other science related fields. Coursework related to the job should include basic ecology, ornithology, dendrology, botany and other related classes. Prior experience working with children in an outdoor setting is highly desirable. Good communication skills and willingness to work flexible hours is a must. SALARY: This is a full-time, twelve-month salaried position. Pay is $15,000/year, plus housing and meals. Benefits package including health, retirement, disability and paid vacations.
