Position:  Nine-month internship

Level:  Intern

Salary Range:   $185/week

Company:  Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center

Location:  Peninsula, OH

Website: www.cveec.org

Areas of Responsibility:

CVEEC is nestled in scenic Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP), located in northeastern Ohio, stretching from Cleveland to Akron. The Environmental Education Center is a partnership between the National Park Service and the Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center, a non-profit organization. CVEEC is a residential facility that includes two dormitories with separate-gender bunk rooms and bathrooms, plus dining halls, laboratories, computer labs, auditoriums, and activity spaces. These buildings complement the 500 acres of surrounding woods, meadows, ponds, streams and the Cuyahoga River.

The Curriculum:

The "All the Rivers Run" curriculum is a 4-day program for 4th through 8th grade students. It is a hands-on, action oriented, interdisciplinary program that combines natural history, human history and environmental appreciation with visual arts, music and theater. It integrates global education, multi-cultural studies, environmental issues and student action. Students use a variety of tools for discovery including the arts, journals, computers, scientific instruments and data analysis. The Cuyahoga River serves as the central theme. Units focus on its history, ecology, and the social, economic, and environmental interaction of rivers and people.

Field Instructor responsibilities include:

Participate in a comprehensive 3-week training and attend additional professional development workshops once a week.

Be a member of a team of 13 intern field instructors, who are the backbone of the program.

Lead morning, afternoon and evening instructional units using the field, labs and activity areas.

Teach day programs, and participate in our weekend and special programming.

Contribute to the food service operation on a rotating basis.

This is a highly intensive, but highly rewarding experience; expect to work 50-60 hours per week. This nine-month internship term is mid August 2002 through early June 2003. Interns are not responsible for students after the conclusion of evening programs, and supervisory responsibility is shared at all times with teachers.
